SASE: the future of secure networking in the cloud

The term SASE, coined by Gartner in August 2019, describes the convergence of two architectures – WAN and network security: bringing together SD-WAN, networking as-a-service, cloud firewall, secure network access, threat detection and CASB, all delivered through a single cloud service model. At Xalient, we’ve recognised the benefits of this convergence for quite a while now, with many of our global clients already gaining competitive advantage as a result of combining these solutions to meet their business demands.

The COVID-19 pandemic, bringing rapidly changing operating models and ways of working and tighter than ever focus on security, is accelerating a shift to SASE services for many large organisations. Many witnessed the enormous business benefits of software as a service (SaaS) adoption when it enabled them to continue to operate remotely – and now, as further SaaS solutions are rolled out and more workloads are migrated to the cloud, CIO’s are questioning the role of their datacenters in the future.

For the future, as we see agility, flexibility and business continuity prioritised by corporate boards across the world, it becomes clear that secure, software-defined networks with identity at the core,  delivered as a SASE cloud service, will bring multiple, long-lasting benefits – including accelerated digital transformation.

Identity at its core

At the heart of SASE sits identity and the concept of zero trust. With remote working here to stay, securing employees’ identity along with role-based application access – rather than securing locations and the datacentre – becomes critical.

As more and more devices are connected, from more places, reducing potential security breaches becomes another challenge for IT.

With this backdrop, SASE is a game-changer, harmonising network security, performance, policies and user experience into a flexible, resilient service. For IT, there’s no longer a need to worry about hardware as both security and networking move to the cloud, leaving them to focus on accelerating digital transformation – safe in the knowledge of having a secure, robust and future-proof foundation on which to build.
