The Client

One of the largest media recording companies in the world, employing in excess of 3,500 people in more than 50 countries worldwide, turned to Xalient to help transform its global communication network.

In an industry routinely engaged in the transference of huge volumes of electronic media around the world, the Company’s global network was critical its day to day operations, and increasingly so as more and more cloud-based apps were being rolled out each year.

The Challenge

Facing escalating costs as demands for bandwidth grew exponentially. In addition, there was significant pressure on the IT team to reduce the number of outages across the network and to increase overall user experience, in particular as its workforce made use of these new cloud-based systems.

The Solution

To address the problem, Xalient undertook a complete review of their MPLS based global network, its reliability, performance and costs, then recommended that a WAN optimization program, to be fully managed and delivered ‘as-a-service’ by Xalient. Utilising Silver Peak WAN Optimisation solution, Xalient began the task of optimizing performance of over 130 applications on the client’s network, bringing to the table significant technical networking and communications knowledge and a leading-edge software solution.

Results

The optimization program is today delivered as-a-service across all of the client’s sites. Application performance has improved and a dramatic improvement in user experience has been realized. As part of the optimization, a reduction in data traffic of 75% was achieved resulting in bandwidth reduction in the US from 800 MB to between 200 and 300MB. Oracle and SnapMirror apps both saw a reduction of as much as 85- 90% after optimization. Impressively, Packet Loss Reduction between the UK and US reduced from 14% to just 1%.

The optimization program led to significant cost savings for the group. Savings continue to be monitored and improved on as the service is delivered across the globe. Following this success, Xalient is now discussing the provision of a fully managed SD-WAN service, again using a Silver Peak solution, as the next stage in its network transformation. Not only would this deliver further cost savings but it will also remove the need for complex network management at different sites, allow for fast integration of new sites into their global network, and will continue to drive up cloud based application performance and overall user experience.
